What to check before sending money to Nepal

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Transfers to Nepal are mainly paid into a bank account, and depending on the company you can also choose an e-wallet or cash pickup. When receiving in a wallet, there is a balance limit set by Nepal's central bank. From the guidance of the companies in the comparison table, we have put together the points that need the most care for Nepal.

Ways of receiving, and the limits per transfer and per day

Wise can send in Nepalese rupees to any bank account in Nepal, but it does not list wallet or cash pickup options. The recipient's name, bank and branch, and an account number of 9–20 digits are needed. The limit is NPR 1,000,000 per transfer, and NPR 2,000,000 per day for each recipient and for each sender. It cannot send to businesses in Nepal.

In DCOM's list by country, the ways to receive in Nepal are bank account transfer, e-wallet and cash pickup, and the currency is Nepalese rupees. The names of the wallets and the places for cash pickup are not written there, so check with DCOM before you send whether you can use them. For DCOM cash pickup, the recipient shows a valid ID and has to give the reference number (RefNo). The money can be picked up for 30 days from the transfer, and after that it is returned automatically to the sender's DCOM account.

When receiving in a wallet, the central bank's limits apply

The Unified Directive on payment systems of Nepal's central bank (Nepal Rastra Bank) (2082, Directive 5/082, paragraph 3) sets the following for e-wallets.

  • Remittances from overseas can be credited to a wallet under an arrangement with a remittance company licensed by the central bank. The ordinary limit on wallet top-ups is not treated as preventing this receipt.
  • Top-ups to a personal wallet are up to 10 times per day.
  • The balance that can be left in a wallet overnight is up to NPR 50,000. The system has to put the amount above that into a bank account (paragraph 3(3)). When the amount of a remittance received from overseas is over this limit, the operator has to have a system that moves the remittance to the bank account the recipient has registered (paragraph 3(5)).

If you send a remittance of more than NPR 50,000 to a wallet, it will be moved to the recipient's bank account. It helps to check first whether the recipient has linked a bank account to the wallet.

Estimated time to arrive, and how to write the purpose when sending from a Japanese bank

Wise says that after the payment has come in and the conversion is done, the money arrives within 15 minutes at banks that support instant transfers and normally on the same business day at other banks, and that the conversion takes up to 2 business days. Instarem states that money normally arrives right away, but may take 1–2 business days depending on the payment method, checks and bank processing, and may take longer because of holidays. DCOM says that transfers to bank accounts in countries other than Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines can be credited on the same day.

When sending in Nepalese rupees from Rakuten Bank, the field for details of the purpose of the transfer is not carried in the payment message, so the specific purpose (example: hotel charges) also has to be written in the "message to recipient" (受取人へのメッセージ) field. Rakuten Bank states that rupee transfers for the purpose of trade (imports and exports) or capital and investment are not handled and are refunded.
