For Vietnam, besides a deposit to a bank account, some companies let you choose cash pickup or cash delivery to the home. The currency received may change with the way of receiving, and when you send from a bank you also need to take care with the rules for the input fields. From the guidance of the companies in the comparison table, we have put together the points that need the most care for Vietnam.
The currency that arrives may change with the way of receiving
SBI Remit says it can send to an account at any bank in Vietnam, but the receiving account has to be in Vietnamese dong. On the other hand, with cash pickup at a MoneyGram partner location, the currency received is US dollars. Even at the same company, the currency changes with the way of receiving.
In DCOM's list by country, the ways to receive in Vietnam are bank account transfer, cash pickup and home delivery, and the currencies are Vietnamese dong, Japanese yen and US dollars. DCOM describes a service that delivers cash to the recipient's home on request, and Smiles also describes receiving cash at home. DCOM notes that the ways of receiving and the currencies may change without notice, so check before you send.
When sending from a bank, take care with the rules for the input fields
Rakuten Bank states that when sending to Vietnam in Japanese yen, the "bank code" (銀行コード) field that used to be filled in is no longer needed, and that filling it in may result in a refund. When sending in a currency other than Japanese yen, it suggests entering the 8-digit CITAD routing code in that field. Rakuten Bank says it checks the details of a transfer from 10:00 to 16:00 on bank business days, and that after 16:00 it is handled on the next business day.
For the case where you got the recipient's name wrong, Wise shows the steps in order. While the transfer is still processing, the quickest way is to cancel it yourself and send again with the correct name. After it is completed, Wise cannot change it, so you ask the recipient to contact their own bank.
Estimated time to arrive, and the Tet period
DCOM says that transfers to bank accounts in Vietnam are processed automatically and are credited right away, 24 hours a day. SBI Remit says money can be sent in about 10 minutes through MoneyGram partner locations, but also writes that it may take from several hours to about 2 days depending on the way of sending and the partner location's opening hours and handling conditions.
Around the Lunar New Year (Tet), local financial institutions are closed. In a past notice about Tet, DCOM stated that for cash pickup the bank counters may be closed, and that transfers that need a review may be carried out after the holiday. The dates change every year, so check the notice for that year.
Send your own money in your own name
SBI Remit refuses transfers of funds that do not belong to the customer, from the viewpoint of preventing money laundering, and says it refuses the transaction if it finds that you sent on behalf of someone else. Uses such as sending your friends' or co-workers' money together are not possible. On the Vietnam side, the Ordinance on Foreign Exchange includes, in Article 4, paragraph 7, money sent to Vietnam as support for family in one-way transfers (kiều hối), and provides in Article 6 that payments and transfers for current transactions between residents and non-residents can be made freely (according to an explanation in the Vietnam Government online newspaper).
